I really want a tattoo.

But I've had a really hard time trying to come up with something appropriate that's really "me." Any advice or suggestions? How did you decide on your tattoos?

Edited to add:

This was something designed for me I've been contemplating for a while. My only concern is am I still gonna be rockin enough in my 60's to pull off that zombie? ;) Oh, and where should I put it?!

to represent you well, it would have to be something super hot, sexy, beautiful and smart

How big do you want it to be?

Nothing huge but I also don't want just some tiny random thing like a butterfly or whatnot. I want a full fledged design that flows with the shape of some part of my body, but something that will not be visible most of the time.

my rule is "I have to like the design for 2 years". I'm glad I have it, because most of the designs I've liked at one point, I dislike later. if I don't like my piercings, I can just take them out. they'll heal up. tattoos are a little harder to remove.

so far, my design is of Hobbes[1] in stuffed form, sleeping in a sunbeam. likely on my left shoulder/upper arm. been liking it for 18 months now.

[1] from Calvin and Hobbes, of course.

There are two or three designs in my gallery that might be appropriate for a tattoo. Best help I can give ATM.

The concept of tattoos scare me, really. I mean, it'll be there for the rest of that person's life!

That's kind of my reasoning for not getting one, is that I haven't had something I've wanted for long enough to actually get it tattooed on me. So far the one theme I'm going with that I have wanted for a while is the trefoil (radiation symbol) because I am totally amazed and fascinated with radiation and all of the science.

I chose all mine from personal experience and making it unique and who I am and just having fun with it. Looking at others tattoos may give you ideas to brainstorm on what you want and how you would want it.

there are a few things i would avoid when getting a tattoo, first thing is those lower back tattoos girls are always getting, the pretty tribal design will look like a ink jellyfish when ur 90.
second thing id avoid is spouces names, you wouldnt wanna have your ex's name on you 20 years later.
and the third and last thing id avoid is alcohol, theres nothing worse than getting wasted and getting a tattoo, not only will you have a hangover, youll have a permanent reminder of drunken stupidity.
most of all it should represent you, people who really know you should be able t look at it on paper and say "wow! that is totally you!" oh,and dont get one off the wall in the tattoo place, nothing worse than seeing someone with the exact same tattoo.

I have never liked tattoos in anything but black or maybe just a single colour, multicoloured tattoos just look tacky in my humble opinion. I'd also say stick with symbol/decorative type images, its likely to look better with age and characters/people/detailed representations just look balls.
